I confess, I frequently personify objects, apologizing to walls that I bump into, asking my iPhone where it got to, and apologizing to the milk I left on the counter, as if they have the capability of feeling bumped, slighted or abandoned.
Personification is the practice of imbuing inanimate objects with humane characteristics. It is a device often used by writers to illustrate meaning. Consider these lines from William Wordsworth’s poem, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud:
I wandered lonely as a cloudThat floats on high o’er vales and hills,When all at once I saw a crowd,A host, of golden daffodils;Beside the lake, beneath the trees,Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Or my favourite advertisement, employing this technique:
This week, I challenge you to consider the emotions, thoughts, or human characteristics of the inanimate.
The possibilities are limitless.
Photographers: can you capture mood? movement? faces even?
Look forward to your responses.

Interesting challenge! I remember grade school and the challenge to describe an object without naming it. I think I wrote about a tombstone. Yes, I may have been a somewhat morbid child. I also liked the ad…

I was a morbid kid too, Sarah. Always writing about untimely death and madness, lol.

I love this, Olga. You have demonstrated how personification strengthens the poetic message. Beautiful.

Surprising character the ad chose to represent the wind. Interesting. Not at all what I imagined the wind to look like. In my last piece, I personified Fate and Destiny. Now I’ll have to scratch my imagination for an interesting character to work with. Hmm… 🙂
