Fallen limbs and pathless woods
no obstacle for a wild child
left to her own devices,
searching for a self.
Only with age, and sprouting
curves, did I learn to be afraid
of shadows, that the woods
equated with wolves and lurking
And that abandoned places
house evil – held captive there
just this side of adolescence –
lost all that innocence gifts
Still I go to the woods –
stick to the well worn paths –
like to reminisce about old times,
invite that wild child along.

WOW-Good, VJ. Your writing takes us to a “place” both external and internal, and is palpable, sometimes visceral.

Thank you. The journey of life is both external and internal, don’t you agree? So often places, songs, smells, etc, transport us.

I totally agree! I’ve lived parallel lives since I was 10–the internal one was the safe place, buffer against the hideousness of the external.

I think I remembered that from past discussions–it’s a gift to be able to imagine something/somewhere/someone else.

The pathos has an underlying strength beneath it – a grit, a will to rediscover the old self.

V.J., today someone gave a like to a poem I wrote awhile back in response to one of Helene’s challenges and I noticed the photo prompt I pasted to that page disappeared. So I clicked on the link to her website and it said that the website could not be found. I know she was having health problems but I did not know she closed her website. Have you heard from her? Do you know how she is doing? I hope she is ok. Deborah
