Should we cancel our community dinner?

The text came in while we were watching the news. One after another, closures are happening in response to the coronavirus – schools, sporting events, legislature, etc.

So far there have been no cases in our area. Our first instinct is to say no.

My daughter’s company is preparing for the emergency. She is charged with envisioning a plan. Work from home is the reasonable alternative, except their network cannot support all employees doing so. She will have to determine who is essential – i.e. will remain onsite – and who will be permitted to work offsite.

I ask her advice.

“I tend to lean on the side of your neighbour,” she suggests. “Everyone in your community is in the high risk category.”

I don’t have to be reminded. Covid 19 can be fatal to those with pre-existing conditions. I would be threatened.

“Think of it Mom. Say there is a case at my work, and I inadvertently bring it to you. That could wipe out your whole neighbourhood. Better to start safe practices now.”

So we all stay home, we avoid contact with others, we stop shopping, eating out – it boggles my mind.

The dominos are falling. Where is this all leading? What happens when the dust settles?

  16. I have a question. It’s fine to say stay at home if you have enough money to stock up and a place to put it. What about the homeless? What about the people who have to wait for a modicum of money to arrive once a month.?
    There are no answers for them.
    They could reach out! to a society full of fear or simply fade away unnoticed.
    I know I’m being negative. But this is a Science Fiction Movie we’re living in.
    Who’s going to collect the bodies when the ALL CLEAR bell rings?
    I have to go write something positive on my blog. Something distracting for people to joy in for a moment or two…or perhaps a laugh.
    Kudos to you VJ for making it possible for our blogosphere friends, to express themselves. xo

      1. So true, V.J. I’m beginning to wonder where this “mess” will take us. I’m Canadian but we’re all in this together. I’m feeling emotionally drained constantly hearing about it.

    2. Jen, I’m grateful to hear you mention this. I am one of those that live alone, i’m on SSI and Section 8 and yesterday in the store I saw people with a lot of money buying everything up. I thought what about all us poor people who can barely buy enough food to eat for a week and cannot stock up and stay home? I never hear anyone thinking about us in that way. So thank you for thinking of us! 🙂 ❤

  24. In my view it’s time to think in larger terms. Let the health care system deal with their patients without accidentally contributing to their load by spreading the virus. Even if you’re low risk at contracting or carrying coronavirus, it doesn’t hurt to relax a little at home.

    A non-corona illness or accident requiring their attention right now is preventable by social isolation. Tempers are flaring. So are anxieties. Not everyone has a level head or common sense.

    My vote is to stay home and write. 🙂
