VJ’s Weekly Challenge #117: except

In anticipation of hubby’s return from hospital, I had it all planned: get him settled, run prescriptions to the pharmacy, pick up a pre-roasted chicken and salads, then home to nurse him to wellness.

Except, the chickens were sold out and the salads picked over, and the pharmacy backed up, and when I finally got home with frozen pizza, the dogs were past their supper time, and hubby was in pain, and in the fluster I read the directions for heating the pizza wrong.

I would have cried, except his distress was real, and one of us needed to be strong, and so I plugged on, reminding myself that tomorrow would be a better day.

We both slept, and I awoke with renewed spirit to be the best caregiver ever, except; I dropped the coffee cannister spilling the contents on the floor, so was forced to ward off dogs while scrambling to clean up the mess. Then I forgot to empty the old coffee carafe (I’m strictly a tea drinker) before pushing go on the brewing machine, so hot liquid flooded our counter. Third attempt I got lucky, but now he needed ice and I’d thrown the cubes (melt and all) back in the freezer last night and they were frozen solid – no give to hug his swollen leg.

And when the kids called to see how it was it going and ask if we needed help, my pride said “No, we’re fine”, except; we weren’t so I said “Please”, and the day got better from there.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. Oh no! Definitely not what you expected, except it’s wonderful that the family saved the day. Glad to hear that it ended up being a happy ending. My mishaps tend to clump in a series of threes. When the first one happens, I get this odd feeling that more is coming.

  2. Isn’t that just the way???!!! When you need everything to go right, things keep going wrong. I’m glad you were able to get through those first few mishaps AND I’m glad you allowed your kids to help. I hope hubby is recovering well, and that you’re feeling as well as possible.

  3. VJ, my first reaction was to offer sympathy, except you wouldn’t have welcomed it. Some days when we need everything to go right, go horribly wrong. Isn’t it a small mercy that there is a tomorrow!
    Sending you hugs.
