“Mom, we’re renovating the old theatre, and, well…I think…”
“There is a ghost there.” I finished my son’s sentence. “Yes. He’s quite famous.”
“Really? I’m all alone here, in the basement, and I’m getting creeped out.”
“His name is Ambrose Small, and he’s been hanging around for quite a few years, so I’m pretty sure he’s harmless. I remember being in a meeting in the basement there once, and we heard him.”
“This is not helpful, Mom.”
“Look him up. It’s a big mystery. Maybe if you’re nice to him, he’ll fill you in on the story.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. My son is 6’3″ and strong as an ox. He’s also a grown man. Somehow, he wasn’t finding it funny.
The renovation, however, went off without a hitch.

Ambrose Small is the perfect name for a ghost!

Isn’t it? He was the former owner of the theatre who disappeared mysteriously, and is now said to haunt the place.

The mystery of his disappearance was never solved?

No. He disappeared in 1919 and has been said to haunt the theatre since.

Out of idle curiosity, I just sought out and read an article about him. Apparently, he was quite a scoundrel.

He was. He has inspired many books, among them “In the Skin of a Lion” by Micheal Ondaatje.

I thought you might! New Hampshire is the midst of a surge, so we’re still sheltering in place for the foreseeable future.

I love the tales of haunted places. Love your son’s reaction, too! We had a similar incident with our son, who is also 6′ and very strong. They do keep us entertained!!

He is still not amused, lol.
