How quickly things change…

Last Friday, a friend picked me up to go birding, and I thrilled at the sight of the Pied-billed grebe on our river.

Saturday, we glowed in the aftermath of a successful fundraiser, supporting the displaced Ukrainians we offered to host – still having no idea who they would they were.

Sunday morning we awoke to an email: Call me as soon as you get this. We were getting ready to attend an information session about housing.

The phone called revealed that Ric’s 45 year-old son was found dead in a distant town. No other details. Shocked and not quite sure how to process the information, we drove to the meeting.

Monday, we were connected with the family that will be joining us.

Tuesday, the coroner reported a heart attack.

It’s been a roller-coaster week. So much can happen in a day.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. I’m so sorry for your loss, VJ. This post says so much – about enjoying things, helping others and facing devastating loss – and then trying to continue. May the others that you are helping in turn help you and Ric to heal. Sending my best.

    1. Thanks Wynne. My father used to say: The good Lord works in mysterious days. Dad’s been gone for decades, but his words keep coming to me at this time.

  2. VJ, please share with Ric my angst at what he’s facing. Not even a chance to say goodbye. My son was also 45 when glioblastoma snatched him – perhaps the heart attack was less stressful, but I ache for Ric’s loss of goodbye.

That’s a beautiful grebe – perhaps a symbol to keep swimming in the water you find yourself in? You have a LOT swirling around right now.

    Hugs to you and Ric
