Six feet across, spread the heron’s wings
great, grey appendages in slow flight
Some wings are camouflaged, propel
insect bodies who hover within sight.
A Monarch’s wings are stained-glass delicate
with each flutter, sprinkle fantasies of delight.

Weeds, perhaps, but wildflowers to me – and I wasn’t the only visitor to this patch – white wings also found the pop of purple alluring.
