I argue with myself all day, and in the end decide to don a smile to cover my insecurities. I’ve already missed three circle meetings and it wouldn’t get any easier if I put it off one more time.
Ric drives me so I can leave my walker at home. Having scouting out the location, I knew the coffee shop was small, with a narrow entrance.
Now, all I had to do was walk in and say “hello”. I am the first to arrive. A voice from behind the counter welcomes me.
Soon, a chipper figure appears, bearing a banner and books, and I am happy to see I am indeed in the right place. I introduce myself. She is warm, and welcoming, and I know I’ll be okay.
Taking that first step to try something new is always daunting. Venturing into an established circle even tougher. As it was, our gracious host introduced me enthusiastically to each member that arrived. By the time we were all seated and ready to start, I felt at home.
Course, the topic of discussion helped. I have found a poetry circle in my little town.
Sometimes a smile is just the right key to open doors.

Fabulous that you’ve gotten into a poetry circle. You really did ace the selection of where-to-live, this being just one more plus. Hoorah!

We really did, Jazz! I had no idea about the poetry circle, but it makes sense, I guess. We live only 20 minutes from a theatre town, with Shakespeare at the core of their offerings (Stratford on Avon, part II, lol). An artsy lot, I’m beginning to discover.

How nice to find a poetry circle! It’s never easy to walk into a group of strangers – especially a small group like that. A smile can be so welcoming.

It makes me think I should be on the lookout for a writing group here. I enjoyed those where we used to live.
