On a recent birding cruise, I came upon two unexpected sights. First the appearance of long tendrils of smoke emitting from the treetops and down the centre of the road. Not smoke, it turned out but bugs. Swarms of bugs.
Then I noticed a number of ripples in the watery ditch at the side of the road. Muskrat!
Can’t say I found many birds, but the outing was successful thanks to the unexpected.
(For Nancy Merrill’s A Photo a Week Challenge: unexpected.)
Wow! That is really cool – both the bugs and the muskrat. I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a photo of a muskrat before, just Tove Janssons drawing of the Muskrat in the Moomin stories. 😀

This was my first muskrat – had to come home and do some research. Playful fellow. Thanks.

I’m wondering what kind of bugs they were as well. I’ve never seem that massive a swarm.

The annoying kind. There were thousands of them. Good for attracting birds. Not so appealing for birders.

Oh wow! That had to be a ginormous bug squall for you to have captured it at such a distance!! I wonder what kind of bugs they were?!

Just what we call gnats, I think. Annoying but not biting.

Wow!
Good to know that you were quite afar from that bug swarm 🙂

Actually, when I looked ahead, the road was lined with rows of them. Ugh.
