There really is nothing common about these mergansers – I find the who family quite appealing. The females show up here first, likely scouting out the best nesting areas, and when the males arrive in their full splendour, the games begin.

The boys looked like they are dressed in tuxedos. There is one female on the right – grey bodied with a cinnamon coiffeur.

I also love these elegant birds, VJ. I think all species of mergansers are uncommonly attractive.

That’s the largest gathering of common mergansers that I’ve seen. They are not common in my part of the world, and I see them only in ones and twos.

They seem to do their mating rituals here, which is usually several males and one or two females. So interesting to watch.
