Three years

“Did you believe that war would happen?”

We are sitting around chatting with some Ukrainian friends. It’s three years since the war in Ukraine started and we are remembering how unreal it all felt in the beginning. Surely Putin was just putting his troops through a military drill, we all thought/ hoped, when the tanks lined up in formation.

“Putin thought it would be over in three days,” my husband adds.

“He underestimated the will of the Ukrainian people.”

It’s a somber topic this day as the US and Russia pretend to discuss a peaceful resolution, without the input of Ukrainians.

And now the threats line up at our border, and some say it will never happen: US taking over Canada.

I trust no one. As witness to one attempted genocide, I no longer hold out hope for common sense.

Canadians prepare to defend themselves.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

    1. Many Russians opposed the war with Ukraine too. They protested and were arrested. Their social media was cut off. They were manipulated with lies. One woman can no longer speak with her father who still believes P was liberating Ukrainians. I’ve had people tell me that they are tired of Canada being bailed out by the US. There is no truth to this, just a lying leader they want to believe.

  1. Common sense has left the building completely.

My younger daughter and I were contemplating this evening the possibility of New York being annexed by Canada as a new province. Beside the fact that she’s a huge hockey fan, we like your political leanings much better.

Seriously, it’s beyond criminal what Trump is doing to the Ukrainian people. Not to mention the American people and really the whole world…(K)

    1. I don’t think anyone could have imagined this scenario. I said to my husband that we would gladly accept all the scientist and specialists currently being snubbed by the US.

    1. I would hope the same, Eilene, but I’m sure others have thought they were safe too. I did see where the National Guard laid down their shields and stood in support of protesters in Tennessee. That’s hopeful.
