Lottery for Life

Lottery has been the focus this week. In Canada, our LottoMax now has two draws a week – the dream is apparently alive and flourishing.

My mind has turned to the immigration process, part of which is a lottery program. Although, I am not fully versed in this process, I remember hearing the story of one young man whose name was called, allowing him entry to the U.S. His journey was neither straight-forward, or easy, his tale leaving me with many questions. (Read story here.)

Those of us living cosy lives, without fear of war or oppression, cannot fathom what drives others to seek life elsewhere. We like to imagine that winning the lottery would solve all our first-world problems. What if winning the lottery was the only hope for escaping horrors, the only hope for a future?

How is this humane?

The consensus this week is that much of life is a lottery. Thank you to all who participated:

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.
