Rehabilitating the Cynic

Scratch any cynic and you will find a disappointed idealist.

– George Carlin

Born of losses,
the way I steel myself –
hard core belying
vulnerability.

What if I acknowledged,
gave name to the pain –
forgave the circumstances
forgave myself?

Would I then melt
into softness, words
losing harshness
joy taking hold?

This week’s challenge was centred around the quotation:

“Strive to be uncynical, to be a hope-giving force, to be a steward of substance.”
(Maria Popova)

The responses are thought-provoking, inspiring, and entertaining. Please have a read:

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.
