Harrington

Just before his surgery, Ric took me for a drive to “show me something”. We turned off the main route and travelled down a dirt road lined on either side by tall trees. “Should see it any moment,” he teased as I eagerly craned my neck for whatever “it” was. And then the tree line broke and I could see a bridge ahead. Ric slowed down and I grabbed my camera.

A new birding place! Just on the edge of our town is Wildwood Conservation area. “This is the top end of the lake,” Ric exclaimed.

Although you can’t see it in the photo above, the place was teeming with birds: Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, Common Mergansers, and Yellow Legs were the first birds we spotted just from the road.

Back at the main road was a small hamlet with a conservation area and walking trails.

Still weak from my own surgery, I didn’t venture far. But I did manage to capture a photo of some of the locals:

The best part! It’s only a fifteen minute drive from home.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.
