GPS indicated the road we wanted was just ahead.
“There!” I coached. “Where that truck is coming out.”
Too late we realized this was not a road at all, but a long driveway leading to a unwelcoming house. There was no backing up. Ric pushed all sixty-one feet of our rig (motor home and tow) forward slowly.
TURN BACK NOW! YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!
“I can’t turn back!” Ric growled. We carried on and could see that at the end of the drive was another gravel road. We might find a place to turn around.
The second gravel drive led to a compound, securely locked up. More signs advised we were unwelcome here. It was after five and the compound looked deserted. Either side of the road was ditch and farm fields.
“We’ll have to unhook the tow and then back up the rig.” Ric said, jumping out of the RV. Then he saw a person. Conversation ensued for a few moments, and I could see the man gesturing to back up. Ric unhooked our truck.
I hopped into the pickup, ready to back up, when a larger pickup drove up behind me with two frowning men inside.
“We’re lost,” I smiled weakly as the men approached on either side. Ric stepped up.
“What’s happening?” I asked anxiously, as the men approached the gate.
“They’re going to let us go through. The other side of this compound will take us to the main road.”
I had not driven for years, but that day, I drove the pickup, through the guarded property and back onto the paved route, heart still pounding.

Do all roads lead to the same place? I wonder.

We have a few roads leading to unwelcoming compounds in our neck of the woods as well.

According to the signs we’ve seen, there be guns . . .

I know. The “Live Free or Die” state loves its guns.

Wow, VJ. That could have starred Jack Nicholson in it.

Here’s an old post from me for the Roads prompt. Though it is not much related to the road but since the incident happened on the road, so I guess it qualifies 🙂
