I try not to pick favourites amongst the many birds that grace our backyard feeders, but there are just some that always manage to take my breath away. The red-bellied woodpecker is one of them.
This beauty is anxious and tends to fly away at any movement from inside the house, so I have patiently waited for him to gain enough confidence to let me take his picture. Et voilà!
Hope his presence made you smile too.
Gorgeous snap, VJ!

He’s a beauty, VJ. There are red-bellied woodpeckers that visit our feeder on a daily basis. They are such a joy to see.

It is, VJ. My hubby made a feeder for the local birds and we’re surprised at the number and variety of our feathered friends that visit.

I love woodpeckers! We see downys frequently, but I haven’t seen a red-bellied in a long time–great photo, thanks for sharing. (K)

Ah, so beautiful! Does it have red on its belly too (given its name)? Or maybe he keeps that private. 🙂 The red head is so stunning!

His belly is more subtle, which is why it took me a long time to identify him. (Who knows who names these birds, lol). I love his redhead though

Yes. So stunning. He has a distinct squeak too, which always lets me know he’s around.

Isn’t he? He’s considerably larger than the usual woodpeckers that drop by.
