Arrogant of me to ask you to stop and read while I have been so absent, yet I have much to share.
How did this broken woman, debilitated by disease, find herself deeply entrenched in the humanitarian side of war? I ask myself this question daily. It is a lesson for all us, I believe. The heart has unlimited capacity when the mind is willing to focus beyond self.
Ric and I accepted a family of 5 on short notice. We are hosting them until our planned for family arrives. It is a joyous and chaotic time. The children are settling in well in only a few short days, and I am officially the Canadian Grandma. The dogs are natural healers. I observe the father’s struggles to reinstate his family’s integrity while he is flailing in the dark waters of war without a life jacket. It is painful to watch, but at the same time, from my observation point I see the depths of his character, and know he will thrive. The mother, too has innate strength and resiliency that awes me.
During after dinner wash up, last night, the eldest remarked: “VJ, the dogs understand you better than we do.”
“Well they have had two years,” I responded.
“So all is not lost,” said Mom, and we all laughed.
“Love,” I offered, ” is beyond language.”
We all agreed.
You’re a great woman to be offering up your home and your humanity, VJ! I want to be surrounded by people like you! ❤

Thank you for sharing how it’s going with the short-notice family. They must be so relieved and grateful to have found a safe haven to regroup and look to the future.

It will take time, Liz. Kids have settled in like its home. Mom is spoiling me. Dad cannot shake the burden of loss and responsibility.

That is certainly understandable.

A delightful snippet of what must be an enormous shift in your household energies! Bravo for the dogs. And many thanks to your example of opening to “other” in times when many seem prone to become more rigid.
