Selfless

“The heart has unlimited capacity when the mind is willing to focus beyond self.”

I wrote these words four days after our first Ukrainian guests arrived. Prior to their arrival, I worried about so much: What will we eat? How will my body cope with noise and commotion? How will we all get along?

It didn’t take me long to recognize that my fears were ungrounded in face of the family’s trauma. I felt compelled to extend my helping hand further, establishing ESL classes, writing a column in our local newspaper highlighting Ukrainians needs, and continuing my work to match Ukrainians fleeing war with hosts and employment in Canada.

Two years later, I am humbled to announce that I have been awarded the Paul Harris Fellow by the local Rotary club for service above self.

What a rewarding two years it has been.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. Congratulations VJ! That’s great. And you are right about the heart and the mind. A good reminder to lead with the heart, especially now.
