Lesson in Abstract

I signed up for a ten-day free painting course a while back. I compromised of 5 exercises and 5 zoom meetings to discuss the process. It was actually quite excellent.

Lesson 1 was to tape off two large pieces of paper, each into six sections. Then setting a timer to 30 minutes, painting on the first with only red, yellow, and blue, and black and white for colour mixing. The second was the same, only with three colours of your choice.

From there we chose our favourites from each and reflected on why.

The exercise was quite freeing, surprisingly. Setting a time limit dealt with the issue of knowing when to stop. Using limited colour palette, taught me to mix more. I tried different tools for applying paint and experimented with strokes.

An exercise I will repeat often I think, as a warm up.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. These are delightful, VJ. I assume from the keywords that you used acrylics. I want to try this exercise. Thank you so very much for sharing. BTW, I especially like the color combination of the top painting. It really speaks to me and looks organic.
