Magic of Poetry

I’ve been writing poetry since I was nine. I was hooked at an early age by the ability to turn daffodils into yellow crowns, and to compare fog to a cat.

In illness and troubled times, poetry is a therapeutic outlet. In joyous times, a celebration.

The magic comes, when I pull out an old piece of writing, and with new eyes, discover phrases that delight – as if someone else had penned them.

I love Sandburg’s take: “Poetry is an echo asking a shadow to dance.”

Inspiring.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. I love this quote (and the graphic to go with it). I was not familiar with it but it touches my heart since I was a dancer for many years, have been a poet for many years, and I have been fascinated with shadows since I moved into this house with a little patch of woods out back. Thank you. This will become one of my mantras.

  2. Thanks for these thoughts, VJ. For me all my writing has given me a way to understand life and my feelings. Sometimes poems are the best way to express myself. It is a kind of magic.
