“A rustle nearby startles me, until I realize it is only a tiny House sparrow foraging about.
Two more land nearby and so as not to disturb their scavenger hunt, I stand still and
observe them. I’ve always thought of sparrows as unremarkable, and yet watching these
little heads bobbing, I can’t help but notice the intricacy of their designs –
the contrasting shades of the plumage, the identifying streak of brown across their eyes,
and their undeniably sweet song.”
Excerpt from Writing Lessons #2: Sparrows
Thanks for reminding me about the sparrows, VJ. I will place a birdseed bowl for them on my terrace.

I love this poem, both for the sparrows’ own sake and for the lesson we humans would do well to heed.

It was a good writing exercise, to consider the ordinary. Thank you.

I love sparrows, even though they are everywhere. I especially love the “sparrow trees” where they all gather and chatter at once. (K)

When I got my very first part-time job as a teenager, one of the first things I saved for was a bird feeder. I love birds, and yes, particularly the unassuming sweet sparrow.

I had taken sparrows for granted all my life. They have all but disappeared from Delhi, and I feel so bad for my kids that growing up they never had sparrows around.

Really? Interesting, as they hardy little birds.

They are hardy but loss of habitat due to urbanisation, pollution and growing population of pigeons and crows have taken toll.
