I’m trying to think of words of wisdom to impart to our eldest granddaughter as she graduates from Grade 8. Since high school was not a good experience for me, I’m finding it difficult to be encouraging.
Here’s what I’ve come up with:
– Get involved. Find something that interests you and join in.
Yep. That’s it. The rest is about avoidance of drama and behaving yourself – not exactly constructive.
Anything else to add?
Tell her to be herself, and not try to please the cliques.

Exactly. I wish we’d known.

Same! I learned the hard way, but learn I did, thankfully. 🙂

Congratulations to your granddaughter, VJ! How about to focus on kindness? I think it’s what people will remember about you more than what you do. And it’ll draw the right people to you. My theory at least.

Good advice, Wynne.

I would tell her to focus on her studies, and still have fun. A child should be allowed to be a child, if you know what I mean. I agree with, Liz, that bullying should not be tolerated, and to find a trusted adult to intervene.

I would also remind her that you are always there for her – and maybe share how you have coped over the years – because hasn’t your writing and poetry helped you thru hard times?
So I would maybe give her a notebook and pen and remind her to find different coping ways as the years unfold for her – and maybe add regular journaling as part of that wellness – she might already journal – but a reminder to what a helpful tool it can be.

and in your note of encouragement – I would list ten things you love about her- even if they are small silly things – because it could be a keepsake for many years.
We once heard a guy had a note like that, tucked in his wallet for 25 years, and he read it when he needed a boost.
so maybe a list of what you observe in her strengths, beauty, etc – and maybe a short poem from you!

Remember that life can be hard, but it can also have so many beautiful moments – so be encouraged a head of time when setbacks come

If you’re being bullied, tell a trusted adult.

Yes! I was bullied terribly. I finally told my Dad and he did something about it.

He came through in moments like this – the ones that really mattered.

I remember it took awhile for me to find a like-minded group of friends. Tell her not to give up on it–they are there somewhere. Your advice should help with that I think. (K)
