What’s that you say?

“Do you like cornflowers?” I was certain I heard the gardener say.

“Very much!” I replied excitedly envisioning a sea of blue amongst the velvet violets of bearded irises and buttery yellow of day-lilies.

“What are these?” I asked when the job was done, pointing to odd looking flowers, whose centers over-powered the drooping petals.

“Cone flowers,” he smiled.  “Just as we agreed.”

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. One of our favorite blooms! We have several varieties in the yard, but the plain ol’ purple are the hardiest and our faves. I like photographing them because there is always one or two petals that seem to be “hugging” one another, and usually a little flip stub of a petal hollering for the spotlight. Spunky flowers!
