I’ve been writing poetry since I was nine. I was hooked at an early age by the ability to turn daffodils into yellow crowns, and to compare fog to a cat.
In illness and troubled times, poetry is a therapeutic outlet. In joyous times, a celebration.
The magic comes, when I pull out an old piece of writing, and with new eyes, discover phrases that delight – as if someone else had penned them.
I love Sandburg’s take: “Poetry is an echo asking a shadow to dance.”
Inspiring.
Inspiration leading to emotions leading to truths. Loved the quote, and your thoughts are totally relatable, although I didn’t come to poetry until I was in my 50s!

That’s an excellent definition. I think all our writing is of a piece and can be accessed at any time to provide both new inspiration and insight. (K)

enjoyed this; I began quite young too and except for a brief escapade into prose haven’t stopped —

A beautiful tribute to the power of poetry. I love, “I was hooked at an early age by the ability to turn daffodils into yellow crowns, and to compare fog to a cat.” So good!

I love this quote (and the graphic to go with it). I was not familiar with it but it touches my heart since I was a dancer for many years, have been a poet for many years, and I have been fascinated with shadows since I moved into this house with a little patch of woods out back. Thank you. This will become one of my mantras.

Poetry is a balm and an outlet. I know what you mean by pulling out old writing and being amazed.
